Pack 25 Official Pinewood Derby Rules and RegulationBench TimeResults
Pinewood Derby Committee
- The Pack Committee Chair will identify a Pinewood Derby Committee to administer the race.
- The Pinewood Derby Committee will schedule a date and venue and notify the pack.
- The Pinewood Derby Committee will obtain the track from storage, inspect it and set it up for the race
- Several
test runs will be made with test cars (not current year cars) to insure
the track and timing systems are performing properly.
- The race will be run adhering to the regulations below.
- The Pinewood Derby Committee will return the track to storage.
Car Construction
- Cars
should be designed and built principally by the Cub Scout with adult
guidance and technical assistance. New cars must be built for the
current Pinewood Derby; cars or pieces of cars from prior years may
not be used.
- All
cars must be built using the materials provided in an Official Cub
Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit (referred to as an “official
kit”). The body of the car must be shaped from the given wood
block, which must support the 4 individual axles and wheels of the
car. These materials may not be substituted except with parts from
another official kit.
- Any
additional materials used for appearance or weight must not be made
of a substance or placed to cause a hazard to people, other cars or
the track. Additional materials must be securely attached to the
car.
- The
car must fit into a box with a width of 2-3/4" and a length of
7", and should have a reasonable height. Track guide clearance
must be a minimum 3/8" height from bottom of wheels to the
underside of the car body, and a minimum 1-3/4" width between
the insides of the wheels.
- The
car may not protrude beyond the starting post on the track.
- The
car may not weigh over 5 ounces (141.7 g) when prepared to race.
- There
may be no moving parts or moving weights on the car besides the four
free-spinning wheels. The car may not use springs, wheel bearings,
hubcaps, washers, inserts, bushings, starting or propulsive devices.
- Axle
dimensions may not be altered. Axles may not be grooved or made
thinner. Burrs on the axles may be removed.
- Axles
must be placed in the precut slots in the given wood block.
- Wheel
treads must be flat on the track and may not be shaped nor reduced in
width. Burrs from the molding process may be smoothed. The words
“OFFICIAL B.S.A. MADE IN U.S.A.” shall be visible inside the
wheels. The words “B.S.A. PINEWOOD DERBY” on the sidewall and
the tread design around the outer edge of each wheel shall be
visible.
- Only
dry lubricant is permitted on the axles; no oils or liquid lubricants
may be used.
- You should be aware that our track requires that your car "break" a light beam to determine the finishing order.
Car
Inspection
- Each
car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Team designated
by the pack before the car may race. Weights and dimensions of all
cars will be gauged with the same equipment. NOTE:
The official scales may be different than ones used to weigh the car
at home.
Be prepared with tools to remove weight or superglue and coins or
washers to add weight. A car owner will have the opportunity to make
last-minute adjustments to bring his car into conformance if it fails
inspection.
- Once
a car has passed inspection, it will be placed on the impound table,
and may not be modified or re-lubricated until it has finished
racing. Each car will then receive an official number for the
purpose of race scheduling and scoring.
- If,
during a race, a car becomes damaged, the Cub Scout may repair the
damage and return the car to be re-inspected before the car’s next
scheduled heat. The repair may only address the damage;
re-lubrication will not be permitted.
Scout Voting
- Voting will be conducted for each of the follow categories "Best Shape", "Coolest Car" and "Best Paint Job".
- Voting sheets will be prepared by the Committee which allows the Scouts to record their car number and to vote by car number for each of the categories.
- Scout will NOT be able to vote for their own car
- Once all cars are checked in; the voting period will be open with each Scout receiving a voting sheet
- All cars must remain on the impound table during the voting period
- When the voting period is closed the voting sheets will be collected
- The Pinewood Derby Committee will appoint two responsible people to tally the results
- The Pinewood Derby Committee resolves ties
- Results will be announced at the Derby, awards will be given at the next Pack meeting.
The
Race
- The
race is open to all Cub Scouts and Webelos registered in Pack 25.
Only one entry per Scout may be submitted. The Cub Scout should be
in attendance to race.
- Each
heat will be announced. Drivers will report to the starting line.
All other people must remain behind the barrier. The cars will have
assigned lanes and opponents using the car’s registration number
for its placement in the schedule.
- The
starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly and then
will start the race.
- If
a car jumps out of its lane or off the track, the heat will be run
again. If the same car leaves its lane a second time, it be
considered to place third. If, on the second run, this car
interferes with another car, the heat will be run a third time
without the disqualified car.
- If
a car fails to reach the finish line without fault of the track or
interference, it will be considered to place third. Multiple cars
which do not finish a race will be placed according to the distance
they traveled.
- A
car which shows a tendency to leave its lane or fail to reach the
finish line may be inspected for repair to allow it to return for its
next scheduled heat.
- The
track should have a device to determine a first, second and third
place finish for each heat. In the absence of such a device, 2 or 3
judges as chosen by the pack leaders will call each heat.
- When
the results of each heat are recorded, the drivers will return to
their seats.
- Ungentlemanly
or unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or audience member may
result in forfeiting a particular heat or the remainder of the race.
Placements
/ Awards
- A
car will accrue points based on its finish in a heat, with first
place worth 3 points, second place worth 2 points and third place
worth 1 point. The point standings for all the cars may be displayed
throughout the event.
- Final
point standings will determine which Cub Scouts will receive First,
Second and Third place awards for each den, and First, Second and
Third place awards for the pack overall. Ties may be resolved with
head-to-head runoffs.
- A
free-race period may follow the completion of the official race, as
time and decorum allows.
- All
the Cub Scouts in the derby will receive participation awards.
Awards will be given at the next Pack meeting.
May the Scouts have fun!
